A police investigation was launched following a Wellington kidnapping late last month.

The incident involved two vehicles seen driving erratically in the eastern suburbs late Tuesday, Aug. 25, Detective Sgt. Stephen Wescott said in a statement today.

The vehicles involved are described as a dark-colored BMW hatchback closely followed by a dark-colored mid-to-large-size sedan or hatchback.

Between 8.30 p.m. and 8.45 p.m., the vehicles traveled from Shelly Bay Road to Miramar Avenue and then to Cobham Drive, Troy Street, Rongotai Road, Evans Bay Parade and KFC Kilbirnie, then finally Onepu Road, Wescott said.

It was on Onepu Road that the victim, who was detained in one of the vehicles, managed to escape, police said.

While the person suffered no physical harm while held captive, the incident was extremely traumatic for them and they have been provided ongoing support, he said.

Police believe it was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to the community.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has seen the two vehicles involved or has a dash cam or CCTV footage that may have captured the incident.

Anyone with information has been urged to call the police via 105, citing file number 200825/5640, or anonymously via Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111.
