All Blacks great Dan Carter has added another title to his storied rugby career, leading his Southbridge team to victory in his club’s rugby final this afternoon.
Carter started in the top five for his childhood club when they won the Coleman Shield in the final of Ellesmere’s senior competition, beating Waihora 40-32.
In his third game for the club this season, and the sixth of his career, Carter helped Southbridge defend his title as they came from behind to claim victory.
“It was tough. I was absolutely amazing, almost walking through some stages of that game,” Carter said after the game.
“Good spring rugby, nice and open, lots of great Hora attempts. They were amazing today, they really hit us, but our guys showed a lot of self-confidence to come back in the second half, so proud – great night at the club tonight I’m choosing. “
Carter was proud to have contributed to bringing another title to the club.
“There is a lot of character in this team. It was exactly the same last week in the semi-final, we were down and going into the second half we needed to find a lot of inspiration to come back and come out with the win. The last one has been a fantastic two weeks, it just shows. the character and how much this team means to each of the players. It’s a real community here, we come together and live for these Saturday afternoons. To get to the end of a season like this and come out with the Coleman Shield – pretty proud .
“Most of the guys I grew up playing with are in the crowd with a few beers already making all the noise on the sidelines. Lots of relatives, friends and people I went to school with. So it’s been a difficult year for a lot of people. people, especially in this community, have something to distract them or think of it as if rugby is enjoyable and I’m happy to be a part of it. “
Carter, who has yet to reveal whether he will play next season, expects to feel the worst of the game tomorrow morning.
“Tomorrow I’ll be a little sore, I haven’t made a lot of contact in the last few months, so the last few weeks have tested the body a bit, but it’s great, I absolutely love it.”
