The party wants to spend 600 million dollars in the new entity, extracted from the budget of Oranga Tamariki, which according to Kapa-Kingi will be “for Maori, by Maori, as Maori.” He is confident that it can be set up fast enough that “not one more mokopuna” ends up in the care of Oranga Tamariki.
“Not the people of Pākehā who use Pākehā models and tell the Maori that they know what is best for them, what has been going on for decades and we have suffered because of that,” according to a party statement.
Oranga Tamariki boasts on its site that more than a quarter of its front-line social workers are Maori. The Maori Party says it has been told to “shut down” its team.
“This is only at the surface level and does not change the culture that harms our tamariki and mokopuna.”
The new entity would not operate under Oranga Tamariki, which according to the party “has hurt us for generations.”
“A contract recruitment model like Whānau Ora will be adopted. Whānau Ora already exists and the intention is to build a network of partnerships between existing and potential Maori organizations operating independently of the government.”
