Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called into a three-car accident at Big Jim’s Hill near Waitara on Thursday.

A reporter at the scene said the roof of a vehicle had been removed and it was in the middle of the road.

Two appliances from New Plymouth and one from Waitara were in attendance, he said.

Senior Sheriff Rob Keen confirmed that there were multiple people injured in the crash and the Taranaki rescue helicopter was alerted.

Both lanes were blocked and there were detours in place. Highway contractors have arrived and have taken over the traffic management.

O’Keefe said the highway was expected to remain closed for a time, but that traffic was still flowing through established detours.

The road was wet as it had been raining in the area before the accident.
