A St. John spokeswoman said four people had sustained moderate injuries and one was in critical condition.
One of the cars was on fire, but an assisting fire team had since put it out.

New Zealand Fire and Emergencies central shift manager Murray Dunbar said firefighters had worked to free a passenger trapped in one of the cars.
A reporter at the scene said the roof of a vehicle had been removed and it was in the middle of the road.
Two appliances from New Plymouth and one from Waitara were in attendance, he said.
Senior Sheriff Rob Keen confirmed that there were several people injured in the crash and that the Taranaki rescue helicopter was on its way to the scene.
Both lanes are blocked and there are detours. Highway contractors have arrived and have taken over the traffic management.
The road was wet as it had been raining in the area before the accident.
