The ship left the port of Napier on August 14 for China, carrying about 6,000 head of cattle and 43 crew members, including two New Zealanders.

He sent a call for help from west of Amami Ōshima, an island in southwestern Japan, last Wednesday when Typhoon Maysak hit the area with strong winds and storm surge.

Japan’s Coast Guard continues to search by boat and plane, but only two survivors have been found so far.

Images taken by one of the Australian crew members the day before the ship’s disappearance show water filling the ship’s decks.

“Really safe,” you can hear him say.

Karen Adrian, the mother of Scott Harris, a 37-year-old man from Manawatū, says her son can be seen in the pictures “looking in awe”.

Her son sent her an earlier message saying, “They haven’t allowed us to leave for 12 hours.”

“At least two decks completely razed,” says his message.

“Twenty degree inclinations … I have no idea the size of the swell, yesterday morning it was 12 feet.”

Adrian shared the video and the messages with 1 NEWS.

A second video on board shows sea conditions just hours before the ship is believed to have run into trouble.

The crew member filming the video can be heard saying, “pretty wild weather.”

The second New Zealander on board the ship was the Southland man Lochie Bellerby.

A spokesperson for her family told 1 NEWS that they are “holding out hope for Lochie.”
