A West Auckland high school is closed for deep cleaning after a student tested positive for COVID-19.
St Dominic’s Catholic College will be closed for three days while it cleans up.
The Ministry of Education informed St. Dominic’s about the infection Tuesday afternoon.
Principal Anna Swann wrote in a letter to parents that the school would reopen Monday after a deep cleaning.
“I understand that this may cause some feelings of concern and concern among some families, but I want to assure you that we are being closely guided by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health,” he said.
“The only people allowed on the site during this time [while it is closed] they are our cleaning contractors. “
Swann urged people in her letter not to reveal the identity of the infected student or their family and discouraged children from speculating on social media as well, fearing this could lead to online bullying and abuse.
Nearby Holy Cross Catholic School said on Facebook that it is taking a “very cautious” approach to the Santo Domingo case.
“I just learned that St Dominic’s College is closed for three days for a deep cleaning due to a case of COVID. I request that children who have a sibling at the College stay home,” said its principal Janice Borsos.
It comes as six new cases of COVID-19 were announced in New Zealand on Tuesday, four in the community and two imported.
Each of the four new cases in the community is linked to the subgroup Mt Roskill Evangelical Fellowship Church, which is part of the broader Auckland group that was first detected on August 11.
The number of active cases currently stands at 123, of which 80 are in the community.
More to come.
