Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there has perhaps been one of the shortest dissolutions of a New Zealand parliament in recent times.

The event in Wellington this morning, which concluded with the 52nd Parliament, had to be moved from the Parliament Stairs to Parliament House due to bad weather.

But alert level 2 meant that the public could not attend.

It also prevented traditional performances such as karanga, Air Force Band fanfare, waiata, and singing of the national anthem from taking place.

The Herald at Arms Phillip O’Shea read the proclamation issued by the Governor General to dissolve Parliament.

“Given under the hand of His Excellency, the Governor General, and issued under the seal of New Zealand on September 6, 2020, Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister, God save the Queen.”

The last day of the session for Parliament was Wednesday when the deputies who spoke were eager to score as many political points as possible before embarking on the electoral route.

The general elections will be held on Saturday October 17.
