A person who snuck into surgery at Wellington Hospital has led the Capital & Coast District Board of Health to review their security systems.
Board of Health Medical Director John Tait said the member of the public entered an operating room under “false pretenses” last week.
A University of Otago medical student was also involved, and they were banned from the health board buildings while investigating the violation.
The person who should not have been in the hospital has been referred to the police.
Tait said the board of health apologized to the affected patient and his family and contacted the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
In a statement, the University of Otago said it had also launched its own formal investigation into the incident.
It would not confirm how the medical student was involved, but said the person is “currently unable to perform clinical placements.”
“Please be assured that the University of Otago sets very clear expectations for its students in hospital settings and has rigorous processes in place to address any potential breaches of those expectations,” said a spokesperson.
