The Health Ministry announced a new Covid-19 death in Auckland this afternoon.

A man in his 50s died at Middlemore Hospital, the youngest of 23 to have died here since the pandemic began. Source: 1 NEWS
The man, identified in 1 NEWS by a relative as Auckland’s Americold employee Alan Te Hiko, 58, died at Middlemore Hospital after the family disconnected him this morning.
His case was linked to the current Auckland community group.
It is the first Covid-19 related death in New Zealand since May 28, more than three months ago.
Te Hiko, a father of two originally from Tokoroa, is the youngest person to die from the virus in New Zealand.
According to the Health Ministry, his wife has expressed the family’s gratitude to the Middlemore Hospital staff for their care and compassion.
The family member told 1 NEWS that his wife, son and daughter had returned from a quarantine center and that his brother is currently in an induced coma at Waikato Hospital.
Director General of Health Dr. Ashley Bloomfield expressed his condolences for the man’s family.
“I acknowledge the anxiety that New Zealanders may be feeling about today’s news, both in the community at large and for the family, and that they are grieved by this death,” says Chief Health Officer Dr. Ashley Bloomfield.

“Our thoughts are with his family and community in this time of loss and pain.
“We have always recognized that more deaths related to Covid-19 were possible. Although the health system has done and will continue to do everything possible to prevent them, this can be a very difficult virus to treat and for some people to recover. ..
“Today’s news reinforces the importance of our shared vigilance against Covid-19, the serious consequences that the virus can bring, and the steps we must all take to stop the spread, break any chain of transmission, and prevent deaths.”
