The earthquake was initially reported at a magnitude 4.4, but it quickly upgraded to a stronger shaking.
People have reported feeling the earthquake from Auckland to Dunedin, with many on top of the South Island and in Wellington saying they felt a strong shaking.
Clarke Gayford, a partner with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, tweeted saying there was a “quiiiiiite squeak” at the Premier House in Wellington during “those good shakes,” and it had caused the birds to nest on the ceiling.
The earthquake comes on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the 2010 Darfield earthquake, the first in the devastating sequence of Christchurch earthquakes.
