“Super Rugby Aotearoa plus a trans-Tasman element will be a pretty good result for next year,” Hurricanes CEO Avan Lee told Newshub.
The players made no secret of the physical damage the competition cost them, and while they admit it took time to get used to the increased intensity, they believe it is manageable.
“It was tough and physical and all that,” says Crusaders captain Sam Whitelock. “But that’s what we really enjoy as players.”
“The body was gradually adjusting to playing New Zealand derbies week after week,” adds Blues captain Patrick Tuipulotu. “And then, in the end, my body felt hardened from battle.”
The revamped competition was widely recognized for bringing Super Rugby to life, producing some classic matches in front of packed stadiums across the country.
“As a rule, you want to improve your competition,” says Lee. “You want it to be exciting and engaging for audiences, and it was this year.”
