Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern believes it is “a disservice” to say that New Zealand has not done well in the fight against Covid-19 after today’s criticism from NZ First leader Winston Peters.
His comments come after Peters this morning objected to the government’s response, of which his party is currently a part, while campaigning in Upper Hutt.
“Don’t keep gilding the lily and saying that everyone is fine when they are not well,” reported the NZ Herald.
“The tests were not continuing, the surveillance was not continuing, the supervision and scrutiny that should have been carried out by the military were not happening. And no masks were worn.”
A reporter in Parliament asked Ardern about his comments this afternoon.
“I think we do all New Zealanders who have been part of that team effort a disservice if we don’t recognize it.
“I think we have to take into account, relative to other countries, how well New Zealanders have done and the results that have been generated,” he said.
Peters yesterday turned his attention to Green Party co-leader James Shaw’s decision to approve $ 11.7 million in funding for a Taranaki Green School.
“Experience in government affairs. Seriously, it’s very important and no more than now, ”he said.
“This is a mistake from bad prosecutors, poor understanding of the market, and worse still, from a very uncertain applicant.”

The NZ First leader added that, in his opinion, his party had repeatedly prevented the coalition government from pursuing foolish ideas in the past three years.
“You can’t keep making these kinds of mistakes in this business. We have said it several times this year. We have said it during the last three years in the Government ”, he said.
“We stopped the things that were a dumb idea and promoted the things that were a good idea. I know it was not always popular with some media.
“I’m afraid this is a liability case where the blame rests with the person who now says they regret doing it.”
