Several women have been indecently assaulted near the Porirua train station in what are believed to be related incidents.
Police are asking the community to be vigilant in the area as incidents continue to occur.
Police have received multiple reports since February of women being indecently assaulted while walking down Awatea St, the Mungavin Ave underpass, and the Kivell St. area.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said women in the community are afraid to walk alone and take the situation seriously.
“The women are nervous, obviously, but they are also angry. We have all been through difficult times with Covid and they want everyone in the community to be safe.”
Baker said people should be very careful when leaving and not going to the scene of the incidents alone.
“Obviously don’t go out at night, and if you see something suspicious or hear something, contact the police.”
The most recent assault was reported on August 28 and investigators believe all of these incidents are related, “police said in a statement.
“We recognize that these incidents cause concern in our community and local law enforcement is concentrating on identifying the person responsible and holding them to account,” said Kapiti-Mana Area Commander’s Inspector Tracey Thompson.
The agents are following “positive lines of investigation.”
“We are asking the public, especially those on foot, to be alert and aware of their surroundings in the area.
“Most importantly, if you have information about these incidents or if you have been the victim of an incident of this nature, we urge you to call us.”
Information can be provided to Detective Sergeant Nathan Smith of the Kapiti-Mana Police via 105, citing file number 200829/6042.
Anyone who sees something suspicious or who is concerned for the immediate safety of themselves or others should call 111 immediately.
