Emergency services at the scene of a multiple vehicle accident near Makarewa. At least one person in critical condition.
At least one person is in critical condition after a multi-vehicle accident on the Winton-Lorneville highway, near Invercargill, just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said people were trapped in two vehicles.
A spokesman for St John’s ambulance said there was a person in critical condition who had been airlifted to Southland Hospital and would likely be airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.
Three seriously injured people are also likely to be transported to Dunedin, the spokesman said.

The spokesperson could not say how many people were involved.
Police, St John Ambulance, Fire and Emergency NZ were on the scene.
A statement from the New Zealand Transportation Agency says State Highway 6 is closed between Counsell Road and North Makarewa-Grove Bush Road.
A person who passed the scene of the accident said the accident “looked bad.”
A car appeared to have ended up on the roof, the person said.
A Stuff The reporter said there was a vehicle in a ditch and that it was possible that four cars were involved.
