Starting tomorrow, the use of a face cover will be mandatory in public transport at alert levels 2 and above.

Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Chambers says thousands of face masks will be distributed to members of the public across the country as part of his plan to increase visibility across the country and help remind people of the new restrictions.

“We recognize that this requirement is new to many Kiwis and is something that people were not used to doing before,” Chambers said.

“While these masks have been designed to be disposable, as part of our educational approach, it is hoped that it will make the idea of wearing a face cover more familiar to the public.

“Our response to Covid-19 has been to work with the public first and remind them of what is required of them.”

Chambers added that police will be present in transportation hubs and other areas with heavy foot traffic to encourage the use of face coverings, which is recommended in public.

“This is also a good time to remind people that while Auckland will no longer be at Alert Level 3, there are still restrictions on collecting numbers and physical distancing,” Chambers said.
