A man died in a work accident at a Ports of Auckland facility in Parnell.
Police said emergency services were called to the scene around 2.15 a.m.
Auckland ports said a longshoreman was fatally injured while working on a ship at the Fergusson container terminal.
St John Ambulance said the man died at the scene.
Port CEO Tony Gibson said the company was absolutely devastated.
“I met with the family … and I offered them all our love and support and I will do everything possible to help them get through this tragic accident.”
Gibson said the company is also supporting the workers who were at the site.
He said that because an investigation was ongoing, he would not provide further information at this time.
Maritime New Zealand will lead the health and safety investigation because the accident occurred on a ship, it said.
Police said their investigations were ongoing and that WorkSafe was also informed.
Gibson said there are three vessels stopped at the port today and they are working on how to process them.
“[We’re] Speaking to the staff, we are a big family here and some are affected more than others.
“Some may not be able to continue working [today] that we respect, and some will. “
