There is confusion and some panic in Auckland after officials urged everyone in south and west Auckland to get tested for coronavirus.

People with underlying health problems are also told, “Please get tested.”

The advice goes against previous official health instructions in which asymptomatic people were asked not to obstruct the test stations.

“If you are in the south or west of Auckland, or if you have a higher risk of health problems if you have Covid-19, even if you have no symptoms, get tested,” the publication said.

But the advice caused widespread confusion and concern, especially as Auckland will go from alert level 3 to level 2 on Sunday at 11:59 pm.

“Am I so confused ?! Why would someone get tested if they have no symptoms?” Asked one reader. “Two weeks ago we were all told not to get tested if you had no symptoms! Honestly, this it’s an absolute joke. “

Others asked why the areas were not based on community broadcasting, with the “mini-group” around Mt Roskill in central Auckland.

“Why just the South and the West, what are they not telling us? Mt Roskill is not West Auckland, ”asked one person.

Many commenters were concerned that the application would flood the test stations, with more than 500,000 people living in the two areas.

Unite against COVID-19 responded: “We have been reminding people to get tested every day. This is another reminder. “

Asymptomatic testing is also recommended on the Auckland Regional Public Health Service website.

“If you live in the south or west of Auckland, or if you currently have health problems and have NO symptoms, you can still get tested.”

The Ministry of Health and the Auckland Regional Public Health Service have been contacted for comments.
