Sir Michael Cullen is supporting the proposed euthanasia law, following his terminal cancer diagnosis.

The former Labor Deputy Prime Minister was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and secondary liver cancer in February.

Sir Michael, who is 75 years old, said that his cancer could not be cured.

The End-of-Life Election Law will become law if more than half of the voters vote yes in the referendum, to be held in the general elections to be held on October 17.

“You think about what is going to happen to you, you know there will be a deterioration and the last stages will not necessarily be so pleasant,” said Sir Michael.

He believes that the scope of the law is very limited and safeguards exist.

“If the doctor involved has any suspicion that some pressure has arisen, then the doctor should suspend the prescribing process.”

He said he respected the rights of those who find assisted euthanasia morally abhorrent, “but it offers people like me the opportunity to end the life I have enjoyed so much in a way consistent with my moral beliefs and my sense of human dignity.” lifetime.”
