The number of daily coronavirus cases in Victoria has fallen below 100 for the first time in 55 days.
On Saturday, there were 94 new infections and 18 deaths.
The last time the state registered fewer than 100 cases was 55 days ago, on July 5.
While the case numbers are heading in the right direction, the new deaths bring Victoria to a morbid milestone: more than 500 lives lost in the state due to the virus.
The state Department of Health and Human Services announced the latest 24-hour numbers on Twitter Saturday morning.
The double-digit number of cases follows 113 cases announced on Friday, continuing a daily infection trend below 150 throughout the week.
The new deaths bring the total death toll in the state to 514.
The state’s health director, Brett Sutton, was asked yesterday if the reduction in the number of cases meant Victoria could lift the stage four restrictions after Sept. 13.
Professor Sutton said that falling below 100 new cases per day would be positive from a psychological perspective, but he could not predict when the orders would be lifted, with thousands of mystery cases still a major concern.
“I don’t know; the tail of an epidemic is very complex,” he said.
“We need to stay the course.”
