Auckland earthquake: weak 5.2 magnitude shaking on city rocks, Bay of Plenty, Coromandel

Many Aucklanders have been awakened by a rare but weak earthquake, a tremor that was felt across much of the region and as far south as the Bay of Plenty.

The 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck 120 kilometers northeast of Whangamatā on the Coromandel Peninsula at 3.47 am

“Strange wake-up call for Auckland. I was at the last big event in Los Angeles, but this shake felt pretty strong,” one person tweeted.

“On the twelfth floor of a hotel in Takapuna and I woke up hahaha,” another person said on Twitter.

“I heard the roar, then I felt the house shake here in Bethlehem,” tweeted another.

There are no tsunami warnings, according to a GeoNet post on Facebook.

The earthquake had a depth of 5km and was felt by more than 2,500 people, according to GeoNet.

Most people rated the tremor as weak (1255), followed by mild (1067), and then moderate (236).

“Yes, in Gulf Harbor I woke up, I did not feel weak,” someone commented in a Facebook post from nzherald.co.nz about the earthquake.

“This woke me up. I thought I was going crazy,” said another.

“Yes, he felt very strong in Whangamatā,” someone commented.

A Facebook user in the comment section of a GeoNet post about the earthquake said that people in Auckland had no idea what happened.

“I guess there are few spilled lattes,” joked the user.

People from Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel and the Bay of Plenty reported waking up to the shaking in the GeoNet post.

“Yes, I definitely felt that in Tauranga my house was groaning and the glasses were shaking,” commented one user.

“I felt the whole house shaking here in Whiritoa. I woke up the children and me,” said another.

“I felt it in Karangahake Gorge. The whole building shook, nothing fell off the shelves,” someone else said.

But not everyone woke up suddenly.

“I was awake on Mt Maunganui. I did not feel it. I will look at all my wall art. They will say so,” wrote one person.
