A body lifted out of the water at Evans Bay, Wellington on Tuesday, was that of a gang member, Stuff reports.

The body of the 45-year-old man was recovered from the water on Tuesday, and the National Police Diving Squad has been searching the area. Several items had been found last night.

Stuff reported that the man was a member of a nomadic gang and was due to appear in court next week on charges of family violence.

“We are currently working with the family of the deceased to offer support, investigating the circumstances and seeking to establish their movements leading to his death,” Detective Sgt. Barry Bysouth said yesterday.

“We appreciate any information from the public that has seen something in the Evans Bay area in the days leading up to Tuesday, or anything that may help our inquiries.”

The man is described as Maori, approximately 185 cm tall, and slim build.

Anyone who has seen a man who fits this description in the Evans Bay area in the days leading up to May 12, or who has seen any items of discarded clothing on the shoreline, should contact the police.

The man’s body was found wearing only underwear, Stuff reported.

Anyone with information should call the Wellington Crime Squad at 105 or Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
