The man appeared in Hastings District Court on Wednesday.
A 27-year-old man has appeared in court facing charges of assaulting a baby girl that died.
The 7-month-old girl died in the coastal settlement of Pōrangahau, Hawke’s Bay, on October 8 last year.
The man faces charges of assaulting the girl between February and October last year, for assaulting her with a cellphone on October 3, and for causing grievous bodily harm to her between October 7 and October 8.
The man appeared before Judge Gordon Matenga, via video link, in the Hastings District Court on Wednesday.
The man’s lawyer, Alexandra McPherson, sought bail and an order for interim name suppression.
Neither application was opposed by police.
The applications were granted by Judge Matenga with several conditions of bail, including non-association with a number of people.
No plea was entered and the man was remanded on bail until June.
The charges were laid following a lengthy investigation into the baby’s death at a residential address.
Emergency services called to the property found the baby unresponsive. She could not be revived.
