A 45-year-old man has been identified as the body found in the waters of a Wellington bay.

Police said the Wellington man – who was found near Evans Bay Marina on Tuesday – is Māori, about 185cm tall and had a slim build.

On Wednesday, the Police National Dive Squad was at the recovery site and found a number of items which were currently being examined.

Senior Detective Sergeant Barry Bysouth said police were working with the man’s family to offer support, investigate the circumstances of his death and to “establish his movements leading up to his death”.

“We welcome any information from the public who may have seen anything in the Evans Bay area in the days leading up to Tuesday, or anything that may assist our inquiries.”

Members of the dive quad could be seen near Miramar Wharf for several hours.

Two police boats were also in the area, assisting the team as they looked for items.

Emergency services were notified about 12.40pm on Tuesday that the man’s body had been discovered near the Evans Bay Marina.

Police urged the public to get in touch if they saw a man fitting this description in the Evans Bay area in the days leading up to May 12 or if members of the public saw any discarded clothing on the shoreline.
