Resource consent was granted in March to begin work at Christ Church Cathedral.

Work is due to begin on the Christ Church Cathedral Restoration Project, after a “moving” sunrise service on Tuesday to bless the workers and the site.

Resource consent was granted in March to establish the job site and begin stabilization of the earthquake-damaged building.

Initial work will involve deconstruction of parts of the Cathedral and the installation of support structures to protect against the possibility of a collapse.

This is believed to take 18-24 months.

The blessing ceremony was led by the Dean of the Cathedral of Christ Church Lawrence Kimberley and was held when the sun rose over Cathedral Square, symbolizing the beginning of physical work on the Cathedral.

Due to Covid-19’s physical distancing restrictions, only a few people were allowed at the site. The event was broadcast live so that it could be shared more widely.

Anglican Bishop of Christchurch Peter Carrell said the blessing “represents continued progress and momentum for this key project for the city.”

“It is a positive and optimistic reminder of the spiritual home the Cathedral represents for the Anglican Church in Canterbury and the West Coast and the revitalization that the reinstatement of the Cathedral will bring to the city and Cathedral Square,” he said.
