Avianca is also one of the oldest airlines in the world.
One of Latin America’s largest airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York, saying the Covid-19 pandemic has devastated its business.
Avianca Holdings said in a statement that the measure aims to continue operations and preserve jobs when it can resume normal operations after a global health emergency that has cut 90 percent of global air traffic. He said his own consolidated income had been reduced by 80 percent.
Avianca is the second longest continuously operating airline in the world after KLM.
“The effects of CoviD-19 have led us to confront the most challenging crisis in our 100-year history as a company,” said Chief Executive Anko van der Werff.

The airline said it is in talks about assistance with governments in countries where it operates, particularly Colombia, its base of operations.
The airline says it carries 30 million passengers a year and is directly or indirectly responsible for 21,000 jobs in Latin America, including 14,000 in Colombia.
