Timne’s Browne St Coundown on Saturday morning.

A 47-year-old man with Covid-19 who went shopping for Timaru’s countdown on Browne St on Wednesday was arrested and received a pre-charge warning.

Timaru’s Sergeant Grant Lord said the man who tested positive for the virus had been shopping at the supermarket at 1 p.m. He was arrested later that afternoon. No other details were available.

Lord said that under the rules of the Ministry of Health, non-compliance with the Covid-19 guidelines was an independent crime and that there was no difference between someone with or without the virus.

The penalty for a violation was a $ 1,000 fine regardless of how the violator violated the rules, he said.

Under the Health Act of 1956, Section 70 (1) (f), while in a state of emergency, the medical health officer may require that a person be isolated, quarantined, or disinfected as he sees fit.

Lord reminded the public that the country was still at level 4, which means that people needed to stay home and go out alone for the essentials.

“Level 4 rules still apply and people still have to consider why they are going to places,” he said.

As of Friday, the number of confirmed or probable cases of coronavirus in the region was 14. This included 13 confirmed cases and one probable case.

Six of the South Canterbury Covid-19 cases had recovered and the only hospitalized patient, a man over the age of 70, remained in serious condition in the Covid ward of Timaru Hospital.

South Canterbury’s most recent confirmed case was confirmed Thursday as a man in his 40s, who is a close contact of a confirmed case. He was recovering at his home in self-isolation, the health ministry said.

When contacted by Stuff The countdown referred all inquiries to the police.

A spokesperson for the South Canterbury District Health Board said they were investigating the incident.
