Tonight, two women, both born in Hamilton and raised in rural Waikato farming towns, just 14 miles away, face off. Who will serve as Prime Minister in New Zealand’s 53rd Parliament and who will occupy the opposition seats?
And while Jacinda Ardern and Judith Collins know their fate, five critical questions will be answered for their parties:
• The Labor Party and Ardern have skyrocketed in pre-election polls: have they done enough to govern, and perhaps even govern alone?
• Or did Collins, the newly appointed National Party leader, crushed the pundits to send Labor back to the crusader benches after just one term?
• Is this the end of Winston Peters after 35 years in Parliament and the NZ First party that he formed in 1993? Have you paid the price for your coalition decision three years ago?
• Law enforcement leader David Seymour will arrive in Parliament riding his Epsom constituency, but how many MPs could join him?
• And perhaps one of the most intriguing questions: Will the Greens pass the party’s 5 percent vote threshold first and then hold the key to opening a second term for Labor? And what price will they put on power?
New Zealanders also voted today in two landmark referendums: the legalization of cannabis and euthanasia. But the results of these polls will not be known until the end of October.
Tonight, it’s about politics. Tonight we get the answers.
