An animal welfare charity has condemned the “sadistic” slaughter of eight puppies and offered a $ 2,000 reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of those who did it.

Invercargill’s couple, Kim and Errol Durry, found the dead puppies in a public area in Otatara, near Invercargill, on Friday when they were walking their own dogs.

The public sometimes used the area for walking, biking and collecting pineapples, so they covered the animals before alerting authorities.

Paw Justice co-founder Craig Dunn said it was one of the most horrible acts of animal abuse in the decade in which he was involved with the charity, and that he was offering a bounty to help catch criminals.

His actions were sadistic, he said.

” The premeditation of simply going down to the park and slaughtering and beheading them … I am puzzled by those actions.

“They could have taken them to an animal shelter, they could have called a vet,” Dunn said.

“There are so many choices they could have made, but having that mindset and lack of empathy for those animals is really disgusting.”

He said someone would know something.

“Invercargill is quite a small city. We are contributing the reward money and hopefully we can help someone with the information.

“Money talks, unfortunately, but if it helps to get those responsible off the streets, that’s great.”

He said there would be a female dog in the community, the mother of the dead puppies, who would probably have mastitis because she would be withholding breast milk.

Kim Durry, who found the puppies dead, said she appreciated the reward money offered.

“Someone is more likely to speak out against these people and realize that they are not right. People minimize it. ”

The dead puppies were thought to be Staffordshire and English Bull Terrier crosses.

The animal rescue agency Furever Homes reported the massacre of puppies to police on Wednesday.

Police said the case was under evaluation.
