When a burglar came to knock on a Masterton home, a “stupid and brave” 11-year-old boy inside saw the intruder with a crowbar.
Nicole James-Boyce was at work, and her daughter Paige Fraser, 15, and her niece Shakita Bailey, 15, were babysitting their son Hosea Fraser when they heard a noise at the front door of their home on Surrey St, just after 8pm on Monday night. .
Hosea went to see who it was, but there was no one. She heard noises on the other side of the house and took a crowbar from her closet to protect herself before going to investigate.
He opened the back door to find a person dressed in black with a ski mask on the door step.

“I said ‘Oi, what are you doing? Out of here!’ and she opened it because I showed her the lever, ”said Hosea.
Five to 10 minutes later, the occupants were in the kitchen and heard more noise coming from the garage.
Hosea went to investigate and saw the intruder’s legs under the ajar garage door. The 11-year-old yelled at him again, ran around the back of the house, and chased the thief down Solway St.
“He was still outside our house, so I chased him down the street.”
The thief threw a stone at his young pursuer and struck him on the leg.
Hosea said the suspect then climbed a fence on the grounds of the former disused Harley St School and escaped.
His sister Paige said the incident was terrifying.
“I don’t want to be home alone again.”
His mother came home shortly after the incident and called the police.
Hosea gave police a detailed description of what the intruder was wearing: a black Champion hoodie, hunting and fishing pants, camouflage gloves, and a black balaclava.
She described her son as “foolish and brave” for the way he reacted, and was glad that he came out of the confrontation with nothing but a bruised leg.
“He’s a fearless kid in general, so it doesn’t surprise me, but it scares me as a mom.”
He said the intruder’s behavior was “creepy.”
“It’s scary that I wasn’t here for my children. That is probably the hardest part for me to deal with. “
Hosea said he was not afraid.
“I’m not afraid if it’s something I love [is threatened] – my cousin, my mother, my sister and my house ”.
Sergeant Major Jennifer Hansen said it appeared Hosea acted on instinct in pursuing him, but warned of the risk of facing strangers.
“There is always an element of risk with the unknown in these kinds of circumstances.”
Hansen asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the police.
