New Michigan coronavirus cases fall below 4,000 for the first time in 6 weeks


LAS NUSING, MI – The Michigan State Department of Health reported 3,896 new coronavirus cases and 187 more deaths Saturday, Dec. 19.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, or MDHHSA, said 155 of these 187 deaths were identified during a review of vital records.

This marks the first time in more than six weeks that the number of new daily cases has fallen below 4,000. The last time was November 6 when 3,763 new cases were reported.

The state has an average of 13,510 new COVID-19 cases and 114 new deaths every day between December 13 and December 19. According to MDHHS, 5,106 new cases and 115 deaths were reported in the previous seven days. .

Cases have been declining for 28 days with downward trends across the state.

Across the state, Michigan now has 458,852 confirmed cases of the virus, with 11,462 deaths. In addition, there are 37,204 cases of probable cause and 613 probable deaths associated with probable COVID-19.

The death toll has skyrocketed, but it remains above 100 per day, which health officials had expected increased due to the nature of COVID-19 deaths, usually within a few weeks. Daily deaths have been above 100 for two weeks.

MDHHSA has not publicly updated the number of Michigan residents who have received the Pfizer vaccine since Dec. 14, listing 2,708 administered doses as of Thursday, Dec. 17. On the state vaccine dashboard.
