08/21 Update below. This post was originally published on August 18th
The lineup of iPhone 12 officially runs late and its release is getting more and more complicated. But gorgeous new images of Apple’s most exciting new model suggest they’ll be worth the wait.
After all the revealing unveiling of the iPhone 12 Pro, the award-winning graphic artist svetapple has now given us our best look at what is (by far) the most interesting model: the all-new iPhone 12. And I think this will become the biggest selling smartphone in the world.
20/20 Update: 9to5Mac has unveiled new models of iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Plus, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max that match the renders of svetapple. They are derived from smartphone case maker Skech, who need to add to their credibility as business makers gain early access to new designs and dimensions of iPhone chassis so they can start working on their accessories. That said, business owners do not receive information about the exact layout of the camera module as the notch because these details are not crucial for their products. This means that the dummy units use last year’s designs there as placeholders. It’s worth noting that makers are now so confident in their chassis information that some are already posting their iPhone 12 cases on sale.
21/21 Update: detailed new price data has revealed that the price hit owners of older iPhones can expect after the release of the iPhone 12 range. The main target market is owners of iPhone XS and they can expect the value of their phones to be hit by as much as 34% within the first three months of the iPhone 12 launch. iPhone 11 owners can, although likely to place, potentially expect even “larger percentage drops”. Interestingly, the data shows the lower capacity iPhones hold the best for the first year, although beyond that it is higher capacity models that show strong long term price. In short: anyone who is able to sell their iPhone before the launch of the iPhone 12 will cash in. But just when this launch will be is unusually difficult to predict this year.
Metafol created from a flurry of recent design leaks, the images of svetapple show the first truly compact iPhone of bezel without Apple. How compact? When fitted, the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 will be smaller than a 4.7-inch iPhone SE. Moreover, the renderers show the bright color finishes (white, black, green, yellow, purple and (product) red) introduced with the iPhone 11 will look significantly better on the new design.
What also remains is the move by Apple to a dual camera system on the entry-level iPhone this year. Apple is known for adding larger sensors with a wide angle, instead of telephoto, camera next to the primary shooter. My only criticism on the design of svetapple, is that I understand that the camera housing will protrude more.
Interestingly, when repeating the notch in the display of the iPhone 12, however, svetapple explains that Apple’s engineers were able to reduce the biometric sensors, which also reduced the dimensions of the recess. It could be about 1/7 smaller than at the moment “. Although small, this would still provide a noticeable improvement – most crucial on a 5.4-inch display. The iPhone 12 will also have much smaller edges than the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR, which preceded it, as it moves to a high-resolution OLED display.
What the images of svetapple you can not display is probably the most radical upgrade of the range: its new A14 chipset, which seems to deliver a jump on multiple generations. 5G is also standard across the line-up, which will undergo competitive pricing for the first time in years. Furthermore, although there are valid concerns about battery life, the other issues of the range mainly affect iPhone 12 Pro models. Thus, with no competitor in its scope and level of performance, I stand by my assertion:
You just got the best look so far on the iPhone 12 and it will be the best selling smartphone in the world.
