New Horizons’ Out of the # 1 Spot on the Nintendo Switch Eshop

He has had an impressive career, Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It reached the top of the Nintendo Switch eShop best sellers list immediately after its launch, where it remained stubborn for months. It fell briefly when Minecraft dungeons came out and I think Clubhouse games It may have taken # 1 for a moment, but if it did, I missed it. Now, however, there is a new game at the top of the charts.

The game, as expected, is Paper Mario: The Origami King, the latest installment in the Paper Mario franchise, something checkered, and something checkered itself. It’s a beautiful game, with captivating origami enemies and truly charming little scenes, my favorite has been a theme park inside a Japanese castle where Bowser’s minions go hang out on their days off. Unfortunately, it’s all to do with a frustrating battle system that really gets in the way of just a few hours in the game, and makes it harder to enjoy all the things the game does so well.

Still, it’s a Nintendo game with a particularly well-known plumber in the title, and there’s no way it won’t take # 1 for at least a moment.

I would wait Animal crossing to take its place next week or so: It has broad, perennial appeal that has just been hard to beat after its notable ascendancy toward the start of COVID-19 locks. It is impossible to separate his success from the important role that served the world at the time, but his appeal is not limited to the moments of plague. It is, as it promises to be, a perfect getaway to a small island, an oasis of calm in a world with problems beyond pandemics. It was a cultural moment, to be sure, but the game stands on its own.

I will be curious to see how long Paper Mario it stays up there. It’s a good game, but right now it doesn’t seem to have the same impact, even as a game like Luigi’s Mansion 3. We’re probably going to get a great new title in the fall sometime, but at this point we’re still waiting for Nintendo to tell us what’s going on.
