FOXB OUG, MASS. – New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has a sore throat after being drilled on a bag by New York Jets safety Ashtin Davis in the second quarter of Monday night’s 30-27 win.
“My neck is only working at a one-degree angle that closes the degree from one side. So there’s a lot of work going on in my eye muscles today,” Newton said in a weekly interview on Sports Radio WEI on Tuesday morning.
Newton stopped playing after the crunching hit, for which Davis was penalized for unnecessary roughness, which was found to be a questionable call.
In a radio interview, Newton said he made a mistake on the game because he made football too long. He presented a side conversation with the abusive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
“I was, ‘It’s my fault and I deserve it.’ But hey, we got it about 15 yards, so shoot, you just have to pay this price, ”Newton said with a laugh.
Newton played one of his best games on Monday, finishing 27-of-35 for 274 yards without touchdowns and no interruptions. He completed his first 11 passes. In addition, he added 10 runs for 16 yards and two touchdowns, increasing his season’s total of eight touchdowns to the highest in a single season in 2015, when he had 10.
But perhaps most importantly, it was the first game of the season in which the Patriots did not make a turnover, which helped them end a four-game losing streak.
The compatriots overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit against the Winless Jets. It marked only the second time in Newton’s career that his team trailed by at least 10 points in the fourth quarter. Entering that situation Monday night it was 1-38.
Sticking to long shot playoff hopes, the Patriots (3-) hosted the NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens (-2-6) on Sunday night (8:30 ET, NBC).
“We have to keep building right now, and for us, we need to know that we are in a position to see the world once more,” Newton said in a radio interview. “We have a great chance to get another one. This is what we are chasing.”
