The number of new coronavirus infections in the US dropped from a day earlier, reached its lowest level in more than two months and recorded a ninth straight day with less than 50,000 new cases.
The nation reported 34,567 new cases on Sunday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That is down from 44,572 on Saturday and the lowest since June 22, when the US reported 30,536 new cases.
Total infections in the U.S. are now 5.7 million, nearly a quarter of the world about 23.42 million, according to Johns Hopkins data. More than 808,000 people worldwide have died, including more than 176,000 in the US
The improved number of daily new infections in the U.S. comes as Republicans are set to begin their national convention Monday night. The party is expected to defend some activities in person as essential to the economy, and contrast with Democrats’ calls to keep Americans at home as the pandemic worsens.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said in a CBS interview Sunday night that he would be willing to take federal measures to shut down the economy to save lives. Asked what he would do if the virus spread with the flu in January, when he would be initiated if he won, Mr Biden responded: ‘I would shut it down. I would listen to the scientists. ”
