Updated for Wednesday, March 3rd
CO 747 new COVID-19 cases were reported Wednesday in Oklahoma. The total number of cases in the state is 425,747, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
The Department of Health reported Wednesday that how it will report COVID-related deaths will change. OSDH will use a provisional death count to reflect deaths as reported by the state’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and show a “more timely picture” of the disease’s impact in Oklahoma.
There was a difference of about 2500 between the death toll reported by OSDH and the toll reported by CDC before Wednesday. The provisional death count on Wednesday was 7,035.
The provisional death count issued by the CDC is based on death certificates. From OSDH: “As cases increased by the end of 2020, our investigative epidemiologists began to encounter the most incomplete records that required an in-depth investigation of the numbers. This process has since led to a widening gap between OSDH death counts.”
State epidemiologist Dr. “We think now is the right time for us to make this transition into our reporting system so that we have no idea we are reducing these deaths,” said Jared Taylor. “We know that each of these deaths is a tragedy and a great value to that person’s family and friends, the state of Oklahoma and the world.”
