COLUMBUS, Ohio – The number of reported cases of coronavirus in Ohio grew by 861 to a total of 109,923 on Tuesday of the day before, the Ohio Department of Health reported.
Tuesday’s newly reported fall is down from the 21-day moving average of 1,116.
The number of people with COVID-19 who died increased 39 between Monday and Tuesday the state reports to a total of 3,871. This is an increase over the average of 21 days, that is 23.
The state counts a case of coronavirus by those who are confirmed by tests and those who are likely, which the CDC defines as diagnosed by a physician as someone who has been in close contact with a person who has tested positive, among other criteria.
Newly reported cases and deaths do not necessarily mean that they all happened in the past 24 hours. There is a delay between when they occur and when local entities tell the state.
Tuesday’s report shows 89,068 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Ohio.
Outside of Ohio
Nearly 5.5 million people in the U.S. have had coronavirus; 171,000 people have died, according to the John Center for Systems Science and Engineering, John Hopkins University.
Globally, just under 22 million people are infected with COVID-19; 775,000 people died.
Hospitalizations
On Monday, 934 people were admitted to hospital who were positive with coronavirus – including 314 in intensive care units and 172 on ventilators, according to data provided by the Ohio Hospital Association.
The hospital association’s data for Tuesday include hospital stays on Monday.
Monday’s numbers are mostly lower than a week ago, 987 were hospitalized – with 338 in ICUs and 172 on fans.
Hospitalizations of people with the coronavirus on Monday make up just 4% of total beds, 7.4% of ICU beds and 3.4% of ventilators in Ohio.
The test
On Sunday, 3.8% of coronavirus tests performed in Ohio returned positive. That is lower than the seven day average of 4.5%.
Sunday is the last day for positive data.
The state conducted 1.86 million COVID-19 tests, according to Tuesday’s report, up from 19,906 from Monday’s report.
The number of tests represents all tests performed. Some people get more than one test.
But even if a person tests positive more than once, they are only counted as one case.
