In every Transformers iteration, Optimus Prime is an eternal Optimist Prime. If the Autobots can continue to fight for what’s right in the galaxy, defend their home planet and the worlds of the rest of the Decepticons with every ounce of oil pumping through their hearts of the combustion engine, then fate will grant them the victory.
But the Optimus in Transformers: War for the Cybertron Trilogy, a new series inspired by the Netflix and Rooster Teeth anime, is grim and existential. Maybe the whole war was for nothing. Maybe Megatron shouldn’t be beaten.
“I can’t help but wonder … is this a desperate crusade?”
While War for Cybertron it is not full JarheadThe new Transformers series has an arena and darkness that seem to give the drama a level of reality that a billion jagged pixels couldn’t do in live action. This is war – and it’s intense
In the final trailer for the series, which premiered exclusively on Polygon, things are not going well for the Autobots and what’s left of Cybertronian’s life. In fact, the first six twenty-two-minute episodes, subtitled “Siege,” take up “the last hours of the devastating civil war between the Autobots and the Decepticons.” Here is a complete synopsis:
The war that has shattered his home planet, Cybertron, is at a tipping point. Two leaders, Optimus Prime and Megatron, both want to save their world and unify their people, but only on their own terms. In an attempt to end the conflict, Megatron is forced to consider using Allspark, the source of all life and power in Cybertron, to “reformat” the Autobots, “unifying” Cybertron. Outnumbered, outgunned and under SIEGE, the battle-weary Autobots orchestrate a desperate series of counterattacks on a mission that, if all goes well, will end up with an unthinkable choice: kill their planet to save it.
