RI ranks 9th highest for cumulative COVID-19 cases per 100,000 children

A new study finds at least 97,000 children were recently infected with the coronavirus in the United States. And, the numbers of Rhode Island are particularly concerning.

The percentage of cases in Rhode Island that were children who tested positive was well above the national average, according to the study released by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

While in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey the percentage was below 6%, in Rhode Island the percentage was more than 9% – the national average is 8.8%.

Rhode Island ranks 9th overall for cases per 100.00 for children.

In Rhode Island, the specific data for children are not reported publicly – less than 1% of all deaths due to the disease are linked to Rhode Islanders under 40 years of age.

Governor Raimondo announced another back-to-school policy

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo’s reopening plans have not yet been fully developed and her story of the reopening has often been confusing and contradictory.

“As schools reopen the daunting challenge of continuing to spread the coronavirus, at least 97,000 children in the United States test positive in the last two weeks of July,” according to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital Association. It says at least 338,000 children test positive by July 30, which means more than a quarter test positive in just these two weeks, ”reports the New York Times.

The report was released because some southern schools have tried to reopen, only to quickly order quarantines or close their doors. Georgia’s North Paulding High School, which drew attention after images of its population circulated on social media, announced on Sunday that it would move to online instruction for Monday and Tuesday after reporting at least nine virus cases, he said. the Times.

States in the south and west accounted for more than seven of the 10 infections in the new report, which relied on data from 49 states along with Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and Guam.

Not every location where data were collected reached children of the same age. Most places mentioned in the report considered children as people not older than 17 or 19. In Alabama, however, the age limit was 24; in Florida and Utah the age limit was 14.
