Actress Naya Rivera died of accidental drowning, California officials said after a post mortem examination.
“The cause of death is drowning, and the form of death is an accident,” said the Ventura County coroner.
The 33-year-old, best known for playing the entertainer Santana López on Glee, went missing during the boat trip last Wednesday with her son on Lake Piru.
After a long search, the divers found her body on Monday, prompting an outpouring of love and sympathy from her co-stars.
Rivera was reported missing last Wednesday after renting a pontoon with her four-year-old son on Lake Piru, northwest of Los Angeles. The boy was found alone and asleep in the boat and then told police that her mother had never returned after swimming in the lake.
Her body was found exactly seven years after Rivera’s Glee co-star Cory Monteith was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room from a heroin and alcohol overdose.
Glee, the musical comedy television series, aired on the Fox network from 2009 to 2015.
What did the coroner say?
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Ventura County coroner said Rivera’s body “was X-rayed and a full autopsy was performed.”
“The autopsy findings are consistent with drowning and the condition of the body is consistent with the time it was submerged.
“No traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified at autopsy.
“There is no indication from the investigation or examination that drugs or alcohol have played a role in the death of the deceased, but the samples will be sent for toxicology testing,” the statement said.
Who Was Naya Rivera?
Rivera began her career as an actress and child model, appearing in television commercials in the United States.
At age four, he starred in the Royal Family comedy on CBS and had other television appearances.
But it was playing the cold Santana López on Glee that made her a star.

The same year she married fellow actor Ryan Dorsey, who is the father of her son. When the couple divorced in 2018, they were awarded joint custody.
