MTV VMAs to take place in Brooklyn in August with ‘limited or no audience,’ says Governor Cuomo


The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will be held this summer despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The event will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on August 30.

According to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who first made the announcement during a briefing on Monday, the award program “will follow all safety guidelines, including limited or no audience.”

According to a press release, this year’s event “will gather music fans from around the world and pay tribute to the strength, spirit, and incredible resilience of New York and its beloved residents.”

The show will also “present epic performances from various iconic venues” spanning all five boroughs: Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan.

“We are delighted to bring the 2020 ‘VMAs’ to New York, the world’s cultural mecca where music and entertainment are woven into DNA,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, musical talent, programming and events for ViacomCBS Media Networks. he said in a statement Monday.

According to the statement, the measures for the next awards ceremony will include “extensive social distancing procedures, significant capacity limitations, virtualization of components when possible, and limited or no audience capacity.”

“The MTV VMA 2020s will be the first Barclays Center event since the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York,” said Oliver Weisberg, CEO of the Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets, in a statement.

The announcement comes a day after BET successfully aired its virtual awards show on Sunday, which featured a series of pre-recorded performances by DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, Summer Walker, and more artists.
