Morning Report: Daniel Cormier responds to Dana White, suggesting that Khabib Nurmagomedov may fight again

In UFC 254 last month. Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov successfully defended his title against Justin Gethsema and then cited the death of his father Abdulmanap and promised his mother to stop competing. However, just days after his announcement, UFC President Dana White suggested that Khabib could not be all that later and teased that he believed the lightweight champion would return at least once to set a 30-0 record. Still, Dana White believes, or perhaps hopes, that it’s true, Khabib’s friend and teammate, including former Division Two champion Daniel Cormier, not everyone else is so sure.

Speaking on his ESPN show DC and Helwani, Kimi Ramirez said Dena White is doing what he should be doing as promoter, hoping Khabib will change his mind, but he still takes Nurmagomedov to his word that he has fought.

“The only thing I said to Khabib was, ‘Brother, you will get the shortest retirement in history. You retired for three days! Cormier said jokingly. “It simply came to our notice then. We laughed a little about it but you know what, I think if you’re Dana White, you’re saying what you need. Hopefully Khabib wants to do the same.

“I think if you’re Dana White and the UFC, you’re optimistic about what Khabib wants to do, but as I said last week, if Khabib Nurmagomedov gives his word, it’s usually a fact. Now, I’m wondering from the economic impact that he can bring back what he can fight? No, and if he comes back I will not do him justice. He is 32 years old for God’s sake and he can still beat everyone in the world. But there are things that if he says it’s his word, I’ll take it at that time. “

Khabib’s retirement is sure to be the subject of much speculation in the coming months. For one thing, if he’s really moving away from MMA, he leaves a blank space at the top of the game’s best section. Again, the general consensus seems to be that rumors between Conor McGregor and Dustin Pourier will resume for the empty title, but it will also mean that the UFC will have to accept the notion of Nurmagomedov retiring, and thus, Dana White they are insisting. Is that they cannot strip Khabib of his title. And for Cormier, it’s just a good business. DC argues that given the value Khabib brings to the table, there is no reason to rush to overtake the lightweight champion.

“She’s smart now,” Cormier said of not snatching Nurmagomedov. “I think he’s smart and he talks about the value of Khabib … Henry Sejudo said it was done, the same night they announced that Petr Yan would fight with someone for that position. You will do that to Khabib Nurmagomedov. No. You sit and hope. You sit and wait and hope. As Dana said, he was very emotional. You can see him, it all came out of him. So you sit and you wait and you hope. That attitude will change and you will get that thirtieth fight.

“You (too) have no decision to make in January. I think you can wait until next summer … The reality is, the way things went with the epidemic and everything, the way Khabib was supposed to fight in April, but he didn’t have to fight until October (and) no screaming Didn’t say, ‘Take the belt from him.’ You’ve got time in the case of Khabib Nurmagomedov and if the pressure comes forward and he needs more time make another interim title and he will only beat the interim champion. The same thing happened the last two times. ”

Nurmagomedov has a history of facing the final champion, as he did in his last two title defenses. And Kimier argues that a third chance will be in the UFC’s best interest, because if McGregor wins that interim title, it could be the best bet to get Nurmagomedov to walk once more.

“Can you imagine if McCraeger gets the interim championship and now you go to meet Khabib, ‘Hey, October, Abu Dhabi, you and McCraeger again, the money boat”? Because now, you’re khabib, you’re gone, you can say, ‘I want more’, and there’s a good chance you’ll probably get more because he’ll run the house. You and McGregor, have run this house. ”
