Morning Report: Dana White talks about heavyweight division after UFC 252, says Francis Ngannou is ‘next in line’

This weekend, Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier will fight one last time to determine not only the world heavyweight champion, but also the greatest UFC heavyweight of all time. And while that fight is far from a foregone conclusion, what seems to set in stone is the next fight of the heavyweight title after this: Support Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou II.

In the run-up to UFC 252, Daniel Cormier has made it clear that this will be his last professional fight, meaning that if ‘DC’ wins the title, he will leave the sport at the top and leave the belt. If that happens, UFC president Dana White says Miocic’s body of work would surely qualify him as one of two contenders for the title.

‘It probably does. It would be difficult to refuse Support, “White told De Schmo. “We’re saying this Saturday, the biggest heavyweight ever is the winner of this fight, so to say he’s not good enough for another title fight for the relegated title would be crazy.”

That sounds like good news for Miocic who is in something of a lossless situation. Should Miocic defeat Cormier on Saturday, he would apparently still be champion and thus continue his reign, and should he lose, he will still get in there again. And either way, according to White, Miocic’s opponent for the next title fight will be a trusted enemy, Francis Ngannou.

“Francis is next in line,” White said. “Again, we’ll see what happens on Saturday and then yes, Francis is the servant.”

All this should lead to the inconclusive conclusion that Miocic-Ngannou II is coming next for the heavyweight division. Except, of course, Cormier does not retire. And while Cormier has maintained that he would like to be at the top, speaking with ESPN after the UFC 252 press conference, White is equally convinced that this will not be the last we see of DC.

“No, it’s not (Cormier’s last fight),” White told ESPN. ‘No, it’s not. It will of course depend on how the fight battle plays out on Saturday night. If Cormier wins in a spectacular way, this will not be his last fight. And know him as I do, if he loses, it will be, ‘I can not go out like this.’

‘You know me: When people start talking about retirement, I think they should. Support, who people said will probably retire after this too, but he nodded that last night, I do not think any of them should retire. They are two of the best in the world, and they still have a lot left in them. But we’ll see. We’ll see how the fight goes on Saturday. ”

UFC 252 takes place this Saturday at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nev.
