one. Four months later, opening day is finally here.
The Yankees face the Nationals at 7 p.m. ET. The Giants and Dodgers will play at 10 pm ET.
Joe Buck will call the Yankees-Nationals game this Saturday night for Fox with teammate John Smotlz.
Buck appeared in this week’s Sports Illustrated Media Podcast and explained how they will make the game.
“Not only are we not in the stadium or in separate booths, we are not in the same city,” Buck said. “I’ll be in Denver. John will be in Jersey at MLB headquarters. Our producer, Pete Macheska, who is phenomenal at what he does, will be in Los Angeles and we will make it.”
While that arrangement sounds weird, this is the coronavirus world we live in right now. However, don’t expect Buck to complain or question him on Saturday night.
“I remember when my dad and I were going to spring training my freshman year of Triple-A Louisville and I was leaving college and going to Triple A, we had a lot of conversations on the way between St. Louis and St Petersburg, Florida, and I clearly remember that he said he wanted you to remember one thing when you walk into this business, “Buck explained on the podcast. “No one cares if the announcer is cold, no one cares if you as a presenter are hot, no one cares if you are tired. No one cares if your point of view sucks. No one cares if you played golf that day. , and certainly nobody cares what you throw. So the game realizes that people just want to see the game and enjoy it and you’ll be fine. And that stuck with me. And I don’t think it was more important to remember than now when I’m just doing a game off the monitor. ”
“John is doing the game the same way. I can see it on a side camera, I can talk to my producer Pete and John in conversation, but we’re just going to put it together and we’re not going to act like, ‘OMG I can’t believe that we’re playing a game like this. ‘He and I can’t wait to go back and I can’t wait to see baseball. We’ll get through it as best we can, and the world will keep spinning and the sun will rise the next day. “
I asked Buck who made the decision that he and Smoltz not call the game from the stadium and if he would have any trouble making a broadcast inside the stadium.
“It’s a Fox decision right now regarding the broadcasters that are in the stadium. I don’t know what MLB’s policy would be, but certainly local advertisers may be there, so I don’t think that’s a problem. So , that’s a Fox problem.
“And then since I’m out there, my wife’s mother just moved into a retirement center, I think that’s the politically correct term these days, so we’re going to visit here. We’re in Denver. I’m not going to fly in home to make a game on my computer. I’d rather make the game from a studio and have everything at my disposal and the cleanest connection I can. Would I worry about going to DC to make the game? Absolutely not. I feel like with the amount of dirty hotel rooms and plane flights and stadiums I’ve been in since I was about 2 years old, I feel like I will, and I will say this and probably regret saying it, but I feel like I am doing my best, with all the guidelines that have been published, from the masks to the hand washing and the social distancing and all that, at some point you have to get on with your life and be smart about it, so no, I would have absolutely no problem going to DC to do the thu go “.
Other topics discussed on the podcast with Buck include the various rule changes for the MLB season, how he feels about the noise of the crowd, what will happen to the NFL season, the NFL week 1 game. From Buck to Bucs to Saints, why Andy Cohen and Howard Stern are great interviewers, they get a game-by-game offer from a webcam company, and more.

two. I feel bad saying this about Fox after Buck was so good at it SI Media Podcast This week, but I have to be honest. This is so stupid.
I have written this many times before. Sports is the latest reality show. We do not need networks to play with reality. Just spread the games as they are and let the tiles fall where they can.
3. This is Jon Hamm’s best work since Crazy men.
4 4. Did you know that JR Smith in the bubble would be great material. And just at the right time, we have the Lakers guard revealing that during his three-month stay in the Orlando bubble, he packed a total of seven pairs of underwear, one for each day of the week.
5 5. This is very, very good.
6 6. RANDOM VIDEO OF THE DAY: Today it’s all about baseball, so I had to post this.
7 7. SPORTS VIDEO OF THE DAY: On opening day you owe it to yourself to spend seven minutes consuming the best calls from Vin Scully.
