But don’t worry, scientists have found a new delicate, flexible source of protein: worms.

According to a research article published Monday in the journal Infects as Food and Feed, the yellow food worm “shows great promise as an alternative source of animal protein.”
According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the world’s population reached 7.7 billion last year and is expected to reach 5.5 billion by 2020.
University of Indiana – Researchers at Purdue University Indianapolis and insect company Beta Hatch Inc. have discovered that food worms, once considered insects, can be used as food for animals and humans, and their waste makes a great organic compost.
Christine Picard, an associate professor of biology at IPUI, who led the research, said the human population was growing steadily and stress on protein production was growing at an inadvisable rate, not even taking into account climate change.

According to Pickcard, many animals already eat food worms. And adding more animals, including humans, to their diet may not be too much of a stretch.
“They’re an alternative source of protein, like insects like chickens – and maybe even humans one day, because it’s an alternative source of protein, because it can be really useful in the pet industry.”
The researchers’ findings will help companies like Beta Hatch to use the DNA of meetaways to optimize their product.
