Microsoft announced the Surface Duo last week (after placing it extensively in 2019), but there are always new things to learn about the unique device. If you do not have this yet, you can check out the 35-minute press release that Microsoft has uploaded to its YouTube channel, but if you would like to take a look under the … surface, CNET has treated you. The publication was given a review model of the company to review.

While shutting down the special unit may be a regular Surface Duo, that changes once you open it. Instead of the screens, you are greeted by two glass panels that reveal the technology that is normally covered by the screens. The left part of the device contains mainly the larger of the two batteries in the Duo, while the much smaller right can be seen. Microsoft says that despite the different sizes, both will load and unload together. Below the smaller battery on the right we can see the Snapdragon 855 and several custom co-processors that help with things like the Microsoft Pen and the adventurous battery setup.

To enable the dual-screen functionality, Microsoft also had to trune loads of wires through the hinge, which you can see in the top right close-up shot above. These beautifully shielded connectors transfer everything from power to video and touch signals from site to site. Microsoft told the publication that this setup would last years or at least the life of the device, although it did not say how many bends it is valued to survive.
