Miami Heat is the last to close practice facilities after positive coronavirus cases

The Miami Heat closed its practice facilities on Friday after a second team player tested positive for COVID-19, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.

The team will not practice together again until it arrives at Walt Disney World to restart the league on Wednesday.

The second player was not identified, however he is reportedly in quarantine. According to the Herald, he is still expected to participate with the team when play resumes.

Heat joins others to quench

The Heat are the last team in the league to close their facilities due to positive tests for coronavirus. The Los Angeles Clippers closed theirs Thursday after a positive test within the organization: The person is part of the team’s travel plans for the league restart in Florida, though who is unclear, and the Denver Nuggets closed the Yours on Tuesday due to a positive test as well.

The NBA announced Thursday that there were nine new positive cases among the players, and had announced 16 positive tests last week. The Heat’s second player is believed to be the 26th new confirmed case among players since league-organized testing began on June 23.

The NBA will resume play on July 30 with the 22 teams that were invited to restart despite the coronavirus pandemic continuing across the United States.

There were more than 2.7 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country as of Friday afternoon, according to The New York Times, and nearly 130,000 deaths were attributed to it. The United States recorded more than 55,500 new cases Thursday alone, too, a new record for a day since the pandemic began.

Cases are also emerging in Florida. There were more than 178,500 cases as of Friday afternoon, of which more than 10,000 were reported Thursday alone, a one-day record for the state. Orange County, where Disney World is, had more than 12,000 confirmed cases. Miami-Dade County had more than 42,000 cases, the most in the state.
