Mets Sign Depth Weapons Montgomery, Hunter

NEW YORK – The Mets continued to increase their pitching depth on Sunday, with P, Mike Montgomery and Tommy Hunter signing minor league contracts. Both received invitations to the Big League Spring training, bringing the total number of invitations to the Mets to 70.

Montgomery, a former first-round draft pick, has been slaying between starting and relief work during his six-year career with the Mariners, Cubs and Royals. He won the World Series ring with the Cubs in 2016, scoring one run in five Fall Classic appearances. Most recently, Montgomery served as a multi-inning reliever in Kansas City, spending two short seasons at Major in 2020.

With the Meats, Montgomery Aaron offers another option on the left behind the loop, the ability to pull like a starter if necessary.

Hunter also entered the big leagues as a starter in 2008, but has done a special job as a reliever over the past eight seasons. He posted a 4.01 ERA in 24 appearances for the Phillies last season, including 25 strikeouts over 24 2/3 innings.

The opening day of the Hunter Mets will compete with many others for jobs in the bullpen. An extra place exists due to elbow surgery near Seth Lugo, but there are half a dozen locks or nearby locks in the mats for Aids Diaz, Trevor May, Jaris Familia, Dalin Bentness, Miguel Castro and Bullpen in the Loop. With Montgomery and Hunter competing against Robert Galman, Sam McVilliams and many others, he leaves space between one and three hours to get the job.

Previous minor league signings include P te players Jerry Blvins, Trevor Hildenberger and Erodees Wisconsin.

And the Mets can still add extra weapons before spring training. He has been linked to, among others, free agent Trevor Rosenthal in recent weeks.
