Metal Gear Solid 5 gamers on PS3 have finished their nuclear arms race after 5 years

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, there is a scene that only triggers if your server achieves total nuclear disarmament – that is, no one on your gaming platform has or is developing nuclear weapons at its Advanced Operations Base. It is a scene that requires global cooperation to unlock, and now, five years later, a group of players has succeeded. It’s something the world hasn’t been able to do since the first nuclear weapons were developed in the 1940s, and it speaks to the game’s criticism of the theory of mutual assured destruction.

Reddit user LoneQuacker highlighted the achievement and posted the scene that was played for PS3 players when total disarmament was accomplished. The video, posted by user “Steff”, is “brought to you by an anti-nuclear gang,” according to the video’s description.

You can watch the scene below and see if it awakens any feelings of hope within you. “I thought this day would never come,” says Kiefer Sutherland’s Serpent at the beginning of the scene. At this point, neither do we.

The scene has actually been triggered once before in the PC version of the game, but this should not have been the case as the prerequisite was not met. The PS3 version of the game would have a much smaller install base than most other versions: the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions far outnumbered the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, in terms of sales.

Phantom Pain would finally be the last Metal Gear Solid game from series creator Hideo Kojima. His latest game, Death Stranding, recently released for PC after a 2019 release on PS4.
