Amazon says it is buying 1,800 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz, the largest such order for the German carmaker to date.
Announcing the order Friday, Mercedes said it would also join a climate initiative set up by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. By joining The Climate Pledge, Mercedes-Benz commits itself to becoming completely carbon neutral by 2039.

Scientists say that man-made emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide should end by 2050 at the latest in order to prevent global temperatures beyond the 1.5 degree Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) threshold set in the Paris climate agreement.
The transportation sector, including the storm in supplies from online retailers such as Amazon, is a major source of carbon emissions.
“We need continued innovation and partnership from automakers such as Mercedes-Benz to carbonize the transportation sector and tackle the climate crisis,” Bezos said in a statement.

Referring to his own company’s efforts to reduce emissions, Bezos said that “the addition of 1,800 electric delivery vehicles is another step in our journey to build the most sustainable transport fleet in the world, and we will move quickly to these vans on the road this year. ”
Although the e-van order with Mercedes is Amazon’s largest in Europe, it is hampered by a contract it signed last year with US start-up Rivian to supply 100,000 electric vans by 2030.
